Assembled
by all-around musician BRAD KAY in 2001 to add a new dimension
to his act and to spice up RagFest’s annual formal evening
stage show, this talented collection of song-warblers includes
MAREA BOYLAN, CHARLES GARDNER, INDIRA, JAMES PARTEN and MIKAL
SANDOVAL plus newcomer FLO LAWRENCE. Ever since that first gathering,
this group has brought mirth, merriment and wonderful music to
RagFest audiences. The Songbirds’ specialty is delivering
syncopated vocal impressions of some of the greats from ragtime
and vaudeville, as Brad accompanies them at the piano, featuring
choice rarities written by many of the ragtime era’s greatest
songwriters – Irving Berlin, George M. Cohan and more. RagFest
2013 marks the 12th consecutive appearance of “da Boids”
at the Fullerton ragtime festival. Their specialty show this year
is comprised of rare and unusual gems by Walter Donaldson, Shelton
Brooks, Chris Smith, Willard Robison, Pete Wendling, James Reese
Europe and many more, unearthed by Brad Kay and painstakingly
re-created for performance by this wonderful group of vocalists.
Don’t miss their outstanding set at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct.
20, on the Main Stage (outdoor amphitheater) of the Muckenthaler
Center.
