Get ready for two afternoons of great
ragtime performance at Steamers Jazz Club and Café. The
format will be similar to previous RagFests: Each act will take
the stage and present sets running in length from a half-hour
to 45 minutes. This year’s festival features several new
acts and several more which were introduced at the last two RagFests.
The talent roster is rounded out with some familiar faces who
have performed at the festival for most of the past decade.
Eric Marchese, RagFest’s founding artistic director, promises
plenty of variety. “We have two all-new acts: The White
Star Line Ragtimers, and soloist Paul Orsi.” The White Star
group is led by Frank Sano, whom festival audiences know from
the Albany Nightboat Ragtimers. Orsi was a Disneyland pianist
for a decade, from the early ’80s to the early ’90s.
Several acts introduced at RagFests 2013 and 2012 are back. These
include Tom Marion and his Ragtime String Trio; and Gary Rametta,
Ryan Wishner, and John Reed-Torres, all solo pianists. Audiences
will recognize the duo of pianist Bill Mitchell and banjoist Jimmy
Green and the vaudeville duo of Evans & Rogers. Marchese points
up the fact that the festival offers “many great solo pianists”
– Bob Pinsker, Doug Haise, Andrew Barrett and Vincent Johnson
– plus “great vocal acts” like ragtime singer
Erika C. Miller. Marchese himself will act as MC, accompany Miller
and do a set of solo piano.
This year’s festival runs at Steamers from noon to 6 p.m.
on both days. Tickets are $10 per person, with kids 12 and under
free. There will be no advance sales – all tickets will
be sold at the door. Attendees can purchase their tickets with
cash or by check (made out to Friends of Jazz). [NOTE: Please
do not make checks out to “RagFest.” Checks should
be made out to Friends of Jazz. Thank you!]
